"Husbands, LOVE your wives, just as Christ LOVed the church and gave himself up for her." Ephesians 5:25

PRAYER
O! Creator, remind us that "we LOVE because [YOU] first LOVed us." Help us who are married to be committed to our spouses, and encourage us when we struggle. In Jesus, Amen.

I read in the news that Alonzo and Beulah Sims had celebrated their wedding anniversary in Alabama—their 81st! At the same time, I read that the divorce rate in the United States is approaching 50 percent, which means that one out of every two couples who marry will get a divorce.

I thought about my parents and grandparents. Their marriages were prearranged according to old Chinese traditions. They did not really know each other before they were married, but they lived happily and were never divorced. Divorce was much less acceptable in those days, but it seems couples in general were more committed to work out problems than some couples are today. Many people today are easily defeated in marriage, like students who drop out of high school when it seems too difficult.

In 1 Corinthians 13:4 we read that LOVE is patient and kind, and Ephesians 5:21-25 exhorts husbands and wives to LOVE and sacrifice for one another. I always remind myself that what I said to my wife on our wedding day is a commitment not to be taken lightly:

I take you to be my wedded wife. To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to LOVE and to cherish, till death do us part. And I pledge you my faithfulness . . . .

As a Man Thinketh

Mind is the Master power that moulds and makes,
And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes
The tool of Thought, and, shaping what he wills,
Brings forth a thousand joys, a thousand ills: —
He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass:
Environment is but his looking-glass.

Quotes

  • Men do not attract what they want, but what they are.
  • A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.
  • Cherish your visions. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment, of these, if you but remain true to them your world will at last be built.
  • The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that which it loves, and also that which it fears. It reaches the height of its cherished aspirations. It falls to the level of its unchastened desires - and circumstances are the means by which the soul receives its own.
  • Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves, they therefore remain bound.
  • Every action and feeling is preceded by a thought.
  • Right thinking begins with the words we say to ourselves.
  • Circumstance does not make the man, it reveals him to himself.
  • You cannot travel within and stand still without.
  • As the physically weak man can make himself strong by careful and patient training, so the man of weak thoughts, can make them strong by exercising himself in right thinking.
  • Every man is where he is by the law of his being; the thoughts which he has built into his character have brought him there, and in the arrangement of his life there is no element of chance, but all is the result of a law which cannot err...

Promises ARE Important

Add caption

Are you familiar with the "pinky swear"? Perhaps you remember it from childhood or still play it from time to time, as I do with my children. Here's how it works: someone promises you something, and because you want to make sure they mean it, you say the words "pinky swear." The two of you then hook your pinky fingers together to confirm the promise that has been made. You can also link both your pinkies to seal the promise with a "double pinky swear." While this is just a game, it can help kids learn that promises are important.

Adults also accompany their promises with actions to show that they intend to honor their commitments. People shake hands after a business deal. In a wedding ceremony the bride and groom confirm their vows by placing rings on each other's fingers. Done in good faith, these signs indicate that when people make promises, they mean what they are saying.

WHY MARRY ?

Add caption
Flee from sexual immorality. . . . He who sins sex-ually sins against his own body.(1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Corinthians 6:12-20)

A radio talk-show host was asked what she thought about couples living together without the benefit of marriage. The caller felt that living together before marriage would be a safeguard against a bad marriage. He did not want to repeat his parents' mistake of getting married and then finding out they couldn't bear to live with each other. The talk-show host pointed out that the divorce rate among couples who lived together before marriage is higher than for those who did not.
But, more important, what some couples call a safeguard is something that the Bible calls sin. Whether it happens in the first or in the 21st century, sex outside of marriage is immorality, and immorality is sin. When God instituted marriage, he said that a man and woman who are "united" sexually "become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). As old-fashioned as it may sound, only a husband and wife are meant to become one flesh.

Sex is a special gift from God to be enjoyed within the bond of marriage. Outside of marriage it is destructive. Millions live with the guilt of a sexually promiscuous lifestyle. Sexually transmitted diseases are at an all-time high. Thousands of children are born as an unwanted consequence of sex outside of marriage. God gave his guidelines to protect us, not to keep us from enjoying life. So we ignore those guidelines at our own peril.

PRAYER:
Lord, we thank you for creating us male and female and for the gift of sex. Help us to enjoy your gift the way you intended. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

True 'LOVE' - God So Loved

Add caption

(1 John 4:11,12) Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

There's an interesting fact about the word "so" here of which few may realize impacts the meaning. "So", the Greek word "houtos", does not refer to the magnitude of God's love but to the manner of God's love. Likewise "houtos" is used in (John 3:16) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son ..." The meaning is "For God in this manner love the world .." It does not mean "For God love the world so much"

So also here the idea is not that God love us so much that we should love one another so much. But rather since God loved us in this manner (the cross), in this manner we should love one another. Which among other things means dealing with other people's sins.

Likewise Paul writes, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless." (Eph 5:25-27) But such an idea is unpopular in the post-modernistic feel good Christian community in which any confrontation with regards to sin or correction is treated as itself being sinful.

"No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known." (John 1:18) And in particular we know God's love through his Son and what he did on the cross.

If we love others in that manner, then God's love for us has fulfilled its objective in our lives.

Add caption

What is LOVE

What is Love?
"Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?"

LOVE is not simply a "Feeling" of affection. Rather it is the willful intention of meeting the real needs of others. As such, LOVE is measurable by the degree to which you are meeting the real needs of those you allegedly "LOVE".

Add caption
